Hbcu Fashion Students Finally Recognized | brandice Henderson

It’s a way to expose students of color to the many opportunities in fashion. This spring we partnered with McCafe to launch a Student Design Competition. The winner will collaborate with HFR and Project Runway alumni Kimberly Goldson to create the red carpet look for the McDonald’s 11th annual 365Black Awards host Janell Snowden. The competition for the awards was stiff, but a winner emerged: TraVonne Walker from Bowie State University. We sat down to ask TraVonne a few questions about winning the award: TraVonne Walker, fashion student from Bowie State University HFR: Congratulations, TraVonne.

The truth is that I love it, its totally different and super-cosmopolitan and also has the side of living life, which I love, added Sarda. LR- Tell us a bit about the show tonight We have called our fashion presentation Carpe Diem which means enjoy the moment! Because we must learn to savor every moment in life, even when we are working. Life is all about how you approach it, said Sarda. We envisioned our show in Vegas (divided it into two parts) – the first part, we place the woman like she is going out to dinner. The palette of colors will be pink, purple, green and blue with details in crystals of Swarovski, feathers and fringes. Then comes the Disco moment, in black and gold with crystals of Swarovski toothat explosion that took the collection to the fullest of enjoying the moment!” “The fabrics are made by the finest European artisans.

Photo credit: Dave M. Benett/VF14/WireImage/Getty Images, Judy Eddy/WENN.com Jennifer Lawrence She’s back. After a brief step away from the red carpet scene, our fave BFF (in our minds, at least) has returned to our fashion radar. Jennifer Lawrence has been racking up some major fashion miles the past few weeks promoting X-Men: Days of Future Past, but this week she took a break from her hectic schedule to step out in style for the Cannes Film Festival Vanity Fair And Armani Party. Photo credit: Dave M. Benett/VF14/WireImage/Getty Images You all know my feelings on jumpsuits and I’m utterly excited to see one of my fashion idols, JLaw, rocking such a sleek black version. Hers featured a plunging neckline, a loose fit and a cinched waist (thanks to a wide metallic gold belt), but the excitement didn’t end there.

Miami Fashion Week 2014: Carpe Diem by Andres Sarda – Miami Celebrity Fashion | Examiner.com

Photography: Dan Kullberg By the end of the 1990s, when international designers were still putting large logos on their products, Swedish designers were focusing on creating functional clothes that you could move in – a development to do with Swedish society at large, explains curator Cia Jansson. On show: designs from V Ave Shoe Repair (2008), AltevaiSaome (2013), The Local Firm (2012/2013) and J.Lindeberg (2014). Photography: Dan Kullberg The emerging group of architects, chefs and designers no longer flirted with countries abroad. They looked at their own backyard for inspiration, and started designing for their own market. Pictured: V Ave Shoe Repair (2010). Why Do So Many Fledgling Fashion Businesses Fail? – Forbes

And of course, Natalie Massenet, the Queen of the Millenial fashion entrepreneurs, started Net-a-Porter in 2000 from a spare bedroom in her London flat. Today, the business employs 2600 staff, is owned by luxury goods stable Richemont, and turnover for the Net-a-Porter group which now includes outlet boutique The Outnet and menswear e-tailer Mr Porter grew 18% to 434 million last year. She knew who her customer was, because she believed she and her social circle would adopt her vision for online designer shopping. In the early days, she focused on building relationships with the brands she wanted to stock in her e-boutique, and on developing and delivering a high-end customer experience. This focus on the core elements of her trading operation reaped massive rewards for Massenet, who now heads up the British Fashion Council and is mentoring a generation of new designers with her sound business sense and inspired plans for fashion industry forums linking creative talent with savvy commercial minds. I want to see more small enterprises benefit from the kind of expertise that nurtures start-ups so they grow into successful global businesses. Its not just about cash injections, but about the management of those funds: we need to instill an understanding of balance sheets and budgets into fashion students right from the word go, or at least begin the process early of pairing them with partners who can develop a solid strategy for their enterprise.

How to succeed in fashion: Be nice | GulfNews.com

I think when organisers are in it to make a buck, to do it as a profit centre, that doesnt work to me. I think it has to come from the purest place of creative talent that needs a platform that needs to be seen and heard, says Mallis, speaking after an industry luncheon on Thursday ahead of the runway shows this weekend. That raw talent then needs infrastructure. You need someone to build it, someone to manage it, and you need outreach to invite the right people to come to it and you need help to market it and publicise it. Whats really nice in this day and age, and was not when I first started fashion week, are all these new programmes and incubators and mentorship programmes, schools and design districts. Thats all pretty fabulous.
