The world’s top fashion houses, from Chanel, Prada and Christian Dior, among others, have brought together their needlework in a unique charitable venture: each designing children’s dolls that will be sold at auction for UNICEF. – ap Prada, Chanel and Christian Dior are among dozens of fashion houses taking a momentary pause from the red-carpet elite to design a series of dolls for charity. The miniature figurines, that sport bejewelled skirt-suits and satin full skirts, will go under the hammer in Paris today in an auction organised by the UN’s children’s agency, UNICEF. Proceeds from the initiative, titled ‘Designers’ Little Faces’, will be used to fund vaccinations for an estimated 300,000 infants in Sudan’s Darfur region against polio and diphtheria. “In the 10 years this has been running, we’ve saved over three million lives. It’s a chain of happiness,” says Michele Barzach, president of UNICEF-France.
So how could Kate Moss ‘s year get any better? With a special trophy from the British Fashion Council, of course. The BFC has announced that it will give Moss a Special Recognition award at Monday’s British Fashion Awards, which will pay tribute to her influence on the fashion industry, her 25-year-long career and the massive body of work she’s produced during it. ” Kate Moss has made many people dream. And not only people that look at fashion but those that create it as well,” said Mario Testino, who’s photographed Moss countless times.
THE MIT CONNECTION Much of Inditex’s success can be attributed to its tightly controlled distribution system that sends tens of thousands of garments a day from distribution centers in Spain to more than 6,100 stores in some 86 countries. The speed of the system, which uses sophisticated software and robots to process and pack orders, helps it to respond to catwalk trends as fast as within a fortnight. It’s a strategy that the company has fine-tuned over the years in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s LGO MBA program in the United States and is a strategy that Martinez worked to refine shortly before he left the company. “Instinct has been used to make many pertinent decisions, from design to distribution. Design is difficult to measure, but distribution is not; analytics lie behind many distribution processes in the retail world,” said Villalba, who founded mStore Operations, a business application for smartphones that supports fast-fashion processes like ordering and restocking.
The former Vogue editor has been tapped by Zappos to be the artistic director of Zappos Couture , the luxury segment of the shopping site. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Talley will oversee fashion shoots, videos and trend selection starting next year. As of now, you can pick up high-end brands like Armani, Balmain, Calvin Klein and Burberry on the site, but it seems Zappos has its eye on cheap shoes online upping the ante when it comes to its high fashion offerings. “We’re really looking to become the destination in online luxury shopping,” Jennifer Sidary, head of couture at Zappos Couture, told WWD. “For us, we still have a lot of brands we’re looking to acquire for the site and we hope that with Andre’s partnership it will help us develop relationships with these brands.” Zappos’ not-so-secret agenda seems to be a good strategy for the site, as it’s managed to master customer service and maintain a pretty laid-back reputation in the public eye, despite being acquired by e-commerce giant Amazon.
